A workshop on complex materials for nonlinear optics took place at ETH Zurich on January 2020 from 29th to 31st. The event was multidisciplinary and gathered scientists that are contributing to this field from complementary perspectives, such as those of disordered and complex photonics, nonlinear optics and material science.
Summer school on interaction of light with cold atoms
The ICTP-SAIFR School on Interaction of Light with Cold Atoms took place at ICTP-SAIFR at the UNESP campus in São Paulo, Brazil, in September 16-27, 2019. This school aimed at training PhD and post‐doc students (and selected master´s students) in the physics of light interacting with cold atoms, introducing them to the basics and familiarizing them with applications in modern technology.
PhD and Postdoc positions at LKB on the theory of complex fluids of light
A 3-year PhD position and a 2-year postdoc position on the theory of complex fluids of light were available in the “Complex Quantum Systems” group of Laboratoire Kastler Brossel in Paris, see below for the jobs description. The expected date of employment was October 2019.
Posdoc position at Institut Langevin
A post-doctoral position was available to perform experimental studies of strong coupling between organic molecules and plasmonic materials, in the team of V. Krachmalnicoff at Institut Langevin (Paris) and within the framework of a collaboration with the team of J. Bellessa (ILM, Lyon) and the team of T. Ebbesen (ISIS, Strasbourg).
Postdoc positions at SISSA
Five postdoctoral positions within the SISSA Statistical Physics Group (http://www.sissa.it/statistical/) were available starting in autumn 2020. The positions had a duration of (at least) two years and the successful candidates are expected to work on the general area of quantum field theory and statistical physics. The scientific interests of the group include classical and quantum disorder systems, tensor network calculations, entanglement in many-body systems, cold atoms, classical and quantum non-equilibrium statistical physics, quantum quenches and thermalization, holography, quantum and conformal integrable models. The application deadline was January 15, 2020.
PhD position on light scattering in atomic clouds
A PhD position in experimental physics was opened at INPHYNI in Nice, on the subjects of either “Anderson localization of light with cold atoms” or “intensity correlations: from cold atoms to quantum optics and astrophysics”.

Postdoc position at IST Austria
A theoretical postdoctoral position was opened to perform research on the theory of nonergodic quantum systems with Prof. Serbyn at IST, Austria. The post(s) was available for a fixed-term period of 2 years starting on 1 September 2020, with a possible extension to a third year contingent on performance and funding. The grant had as its main theme the different routes of avoiding thermal equilibrium in isolated quantum systems, approached using both analytical and numerical techniques.
PhD position "Simulating disordered quantum systems with a Potassium BEC: many-body effects and topology" (Lille)
A PhD position in experimental physics was opened in the Quantum Chaos group at the PhLAM Laboratory, Université de Lille, for studying many-body effects and topology in simulated disordered quantum systems with a Potassium BEC.

Workshop « Atoms and photons Nice 2019 »
A workshop on atoms and photons took place in Nice (France) on November 2019 from 5th to 7th. This workshop brought together leading experts on cold atoms, quantum physics, nonlinear optics, light-atom interaction and related collective phenomena. The workshop included an exceptional session at Calern and a visit of Calern observatory.
Les Houches predoc school on interaction of light and cold atoms
A two-week predoctoral school on interaction of light and cold atoms took place in Les Houches from 30 September to 11 October 2019. The course was targeted at the advanced undergraduate level and emphasizes formal lectures building on textbook knowledge. This goal meets the requirements of the Les Houches pre-doctoral school program. The school was intended primarily for PhD students in their first or second year.
Summer school Imaging in Wave Physics: Multi-Wave and Large Sensor Networks
A summer school on “Imaging in Wave Physics: Multi-Wave and Large Sensor Networks” and supported by the GdR Complexe took place at the Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse in Corsica on September 23rd – 27th, 2019. The school was organized by A. Aubry, R. Pierrat and S. Popoff and consisted of lectures given by eminent scientists and seminars to present recent works and applications. Main topics included waves in complex media, time-reversal, multi-wave, seismic, ultrasound, speckle imaging, deep learning. The deadline for applications was June 1st, 2019. Postdoc positions at Wesleyan University
Two post-doc openings were starting in the group of Pr. Tsampikos Kottos at Wesleyan University (tkottos at wesleyan.edu). One of the post-doc openings was on experimental microwave physics, and the other in theoretical wave transport.
Postdoc position on photonic quantum fluids
A two-year postdoc position was opened in the group of Prof. Alberto Bramati at LKB in Paris. The postdoc was funded by the European Project « Photons for Quantum Simulation » (PhoQuS), which has been selected in the framework of the prestigious Quantum Flagship.
Complex Nanophotonics Science Camp
The 4th Complex Nanophotonics Science Camp, organized by Jacopo Bertolotti, Paloma Huidobro, Giorgio Volpe and Kevin Vynck, took place on 11-14 August 2019 in the Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park, near London. The Science Camp brought together about 60 early-career scientists working at the interface between photonics and complexity – but also journal editors, grant panellists, and industrial representatives.
Workshop on time crystals
A workshop on ‘Time crystals and Related Phenomena’ took place at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, 4-6 September 2019. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts and young researchers working on time crystals and periodically driven systems and to exchange knowledge and experience.
Conference "Waves Côte d'Azur"
A transdisciplinary conference on nonlinearity and disorder in wave phenomena and supported by the GdR Complexe took place in Nice, France, from 4 to 7 June, 2019.
Series of lectures at Institut Langevin
From April 1st to May 19th, Pr. Stefan Rotter from the university of Vienna (http://dollywood.itp.tuwien.ac.at/~rotter/) gave three lectures on Friday, April 5th/12th/19th at 11 am in the IPGP amphitheater, on the random anti-laser, the physics of exceptional points and the Wigner-Smith operator.

Les Houches predoc school on « Light Matter Interaction in Dilute Media and Individual Quantum Systems »
A one week pre-doctoral school in les Houches on « Light Matter Interaction in Dilute Media and Individual Quantum Systems » was organised by Quentin Glorieux, Julien Laurat and Antoine Browaeys. The school took place between april 14th and 19th 2019. It was designed for undergraduate master students, and first and second year PhD students.
Workshop of the GdR
The first workshop of the GdR Complexe gathered French and international research teams working around the physics of waves in disordered media or in complex systems in the broad sense. The workshop took place at Institut Langevin in Paris, on April 1-2 2019.
A 18-months postdoctoral position at Institut d’Electronique et des Télécommunications de Rennes dealing with the cross-correlation of diffuse electromagnetic fields in reveberation chambers was opened to start between november 2018 and March 2019.
Workshop on "Localization of Waves"
A workshop on “Localization of Waves” took place in Paris, in January 9-11, 2018. The workshop was preceded by short courses on spectral theory and mathematical approaches to localization at Institut d’Optique, Palaiseau, in January 7-8, and organized by Guy David (Orsay) and Marcel Filoche (Palaiseau). A workshop on chiral modes in optics and electronics in 2D systems took place in Aussois (France), in November 26-28, 2018. The workshop aimed to establish a dialog between researchers working with electrons, photons, polaritons, Cooper pairs, cold atoms, phonons on this topic.

A postdoc position on ”Advanced Symmetry Concepts and their Violation in Composite Photonic Structures” was opened in the group of Prof. Tsampikos Kottos (Wesleyan University). The project advances the notion of spatiotemporal symmetries in photonic structures for the development of a new generation of non-reciprocal devices (isolators, circulators) and power/fluence limiters (i.e. optical — up to microwave — filters that protect sensitive sensors from high-power/fluence incident radiation).

Postdoc position at LPT Toulouse
A 2-year postdoctoral position in theoretical physics opens in autumn 2018 for a joint project between the Laboratoire de Physique Théorique, (LPT, Toulouse) and the Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modèles Statistiques (LPTMS, Orsay). The research project is centered on theoretical studies of quantum transport with cold atoms in disordered or chaotic systems in close connection with experiments.
