After his engineering degree at Institut National des Sciences Appliquées and his Master degree at Université de Rennes, Simon Pigeon went to graduate school at the Paris Diderot University. In 2011, he earned a PhD in Quantum Optics at the laboratory Matériaux et Phénomènes Quantiques under the supervision of Pr. Cristiano Ciuti. During his PhD, he studied theoretical aspects of semiconductor microcavity to generate non-classical states of light and fluidic-like behavior of light in non-linear medium, work for which he received the prize Le Monde de la recherche universitaire. In 2012, after a master in Sciences Studies he joined Tobias Ambjörnsson at Lund University in Sweden as a postdoctoral fellow to study statical physics problem apply to biological systems. In 2013, he moved to Northern Ireland to work on thermodynamics in quantum regime with Mauro Paternostro and Gabriele De Chiara.

Simon Pigeon was awarded simultaneously in 2016 a Marie Curie European fellowship and an ANR research grant (C-FLigHT) to study thermodynamic and hydrodynamic aspects of exciton-polariton fluids. The project started in June 2016, with Simon Pigeon taking a position of postdoctoral researcher at Laboratoire Kastler Brossel (LKB) in the Quantum Optics group in Paris.

He is co-author of 18 publications in international peer reviewed journals (h=7, >800 citations).
